Kodak Gold 200 // Mamiya RB67
I got back some photos from the lab last night. I’ve been borrowing a Mamiya RB67 from my friend Alex for the last month or so, and I’ve been slowly getting my bearing with it. I started out taking some portraits of my family during a Christmas get-together. Here are those photos.
Overall, I’ve enjoyed shooting medium format, but I’d be lying if i said I was absolutely thrilled with the results on a “resolution” level. These photos, at least to my eye, don’t embody the step up in resolution that I had anticipated after shooting 35mm for so long. I could just be chalking this up to the camera and lens. I find that these portraits are not as sharp as i would like them. From a distance, sure, but when you zoom in, you can see the softness on their faces. Maybe this is just the way it is, but it makes me wary of blowing these up/printing these.
After this gathering, I went out to take some more photos. These are what I got.
These photos imspire a bit more confidence in me. There is still the sharpness/resolution issue but the photos themselves do have a different “feel” than their 35mm counterparts.
Finding that Plymouth was awesome. Someday I’ll have an arsenal up my sleeve of how to compose a rotting/rusty car. I can’t quite seem to figure it out just yet. Stay tuned.
